Innovation Alliance Statement on Senate Small Business Committee Hearing on Patent System

Innovation Alliance Executive Director Brian Pomper released the following statement on the Senate Small Business Committee’s hearing on changes to the U.S. patent system and its impact on America’s small businesses:

“The Innovation Alliance commends the Senate Small Business Committee for holding its hearing today on the patent system.  The Committee heard from witnesses testifying to just how essential patent protection is to the growth and success of small businesses and startups.  A recent study sponsored by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the Harvard and NYU business schools, entitled ‘The Bright Side of Patents,’ found that patents increase employment growth for a typical startup by 36 percent over five years and increase sales growth by 51 percent.  Patents also uniquely give small businesses a critical tool to level the playing field and give them a fair shot when dealing with larger, more established, and better financed companies.  Today’s hearing reinforced that Congress should reject any proposed changes to the patent system that would disrupt the ability of small businesses and startups to protect their inventions and create jobs.”
